2/15/2012"McVan, Inc. Selects Computer Associates’ Managed Services for Fool-proof Data Security and Fast Recovery"

February 15, 2012 — Computer Associates, Inc., a leading provider of proactive, managed IT services to Southern New England today announced that McVan, Inc., a long-time manufacturer and wholesale distributor of Catholic Religious Gifts has chosen CAI’s Advanced Managed Backup and Recovery (AMBaR) and server and desktop management services for fool-proof data security and fast recovery.

Prior to signing on for the AMBaR service had backed up their data to conventional magnetic tapes, the most common method of storage protection. While the cost per megabyte for tape storage is low, McVan was concerned about, not only the security of their client and business data, but also how long it would take the company to fully recover from a server failure or other catastrophic event.

Fred Adler, president at McVan said, “Like a lot of small businesses, we were diligent in backing up our data, but we never considered how much time and effort would be required to actually recover the data in the case of an emergency.” “We also found that the tape backups limited the point in time to which we can recover our systems should disaster strike,” Adler said. “If a critical system fails on a given day, the best we could do was to recover the previous day’s data. In addition, rebuilding even a single business application from tape proved to be a difficult and lengthy process.”

Disk-based Data Backup Improves Availability, Slashes Recovery Time

CAI’s AMBaR service is anchored by a specialized backup and virtual server appliance that backs up servers and desktops as frequently as every 15 minutes and creates an independent 256-bit encrypted tunnel to transmit the data to a secure offsite location. Once transmitted, the data resides in an encrypted, compressed format. That remote site then replicates again to an alternate data center, creating a total of three copies of the fully encrypted data in three geographically distinct regions.

Today, CAI’s service is in use backing up the company’s main (and only) server, and providing McVan with the comfort of knowing that they can get back to business in a matter of minutes if a disaster were to strike.

Helping Resolve Day-to-Day Desktop Computing Issues

McVan also utilizes CAI’s Desktop and Server Management service. Designed for small to medium-size businesses, the service monitors McVan’s servers, desktops and laptops, terminals, peripherals and other devices connected to their network and protects them against viruses, malware, e-mail, image spam and mechanical failure.

The service monitors and automatically updates each device regularly based on software patches distributed by Microsoft and other vendors.

"The monthly report we run includes every patch or software update that’s been distributed throughout the organization,” Adler added. “It is extremely reassuring to know that these critical updates are being looked after and deployed on a regular basis and we couldn’t be happier with our decision to implement CAI’s IT managed services,” Adler commented. “CAI is truly an extension of our IT team and helps ensure that our entire staff is able to work with minimal interruption
